Cossack cavalry is coming

Spring is coming, Wilanov too and some Cossack style cavalry is awaiting last checks and magic wash.

 Hiljalleen etenee tämäkin projekti.

Testing new lists - Uusien listojen sisäänajoa

After painting tufecki and azabs I wanted to find an excuse to throw them on the table. Well
there are two Ottoman skirmish lists depicting border garrisons and one of them allows deploying humongous hordes of either segban, azab, tufecki or even janissaries.  So I built one around capable core of ten pases of tufecki some azabs, two light guns and some miscallenaeous cavalry. To oppose them I summoned Polish skirmish force with loads of dragoons, quite a lot of elite cossack type cavalry and squadron of normal cossack type cavalry.

Opposing me I had my son, playing his first BFaS game so this was in a way tutorial game.
Corrupting next gen

Skenaariona take and hold- noppa olisi tuonut ambushin tai attack on the villagen, mutten halunnut hyödyntää jalkaväkipainotteista armeijaani joten ehdotin että pelaamme keskikukkulan valloitusta.  Tässähän keskimmäisen kukkulan keskipisteen hallinta on 4 pistettä ja niin sanottujen lähestymisteiden pisteen kukin, lisäksi mahdollisista tappioista plussaa tai miinusta piste pari.
Tilanne ensimmäisen vuoron jälkeen - turkkilaiset alareunassa, 6 laattaa rakuunoita väijytyksessä. Kuten tavallista kumpikin on valmistautunut hallitsemaan itseään lähintä kohdetta.

Scenario take and hold ( fudged the die roll by not using Turks defensive skirmish list and choosing a scenario with maneuver for advantage of the novice)  Turks on lower edge, center hill worth four points, other red markers 1 each plus what casualties would bring.

Son deployed well using his 15 point advantage in recon points to put squadron of 6 bases of dragoons to ambush. And they appeared already in end of turn 1 denying me the covered acces to the center hill. In prolonged firefight tufecki and sahaloz failed to dislodge them  from the forest. Instead the dragoons disorganized azabs and killed the crew of the light gun.On my right I slayed the 2 base banner of elite cossacks with light cav and sipahi, but with the price of besli being disorganized for better part of the game.

Tufecki reacted to threat of cossacks on the hill by turning to face it, and got mauled by sweeping squadron of elite cossacks coming from my left flank.

Who then refused to pursuit and prepared to support their comrades on the hill. My aga got shot so badly that he was out of comission for gameturn 5.  That was a samart decision, for the cossacks on the hill got charged, won their melee and pursued my sipahis quite far from the center on turn five.
Eivätkä eliittikasakat edes viitsineet takaa-ajaa, vaan valmistautuivat tukemaan joukkojaan kukkulalla.

Taktinen voitto pojalle.

End result tactical victory to my son who held the center hill and only took acceptable losses. Ottoman held sidetargets and my heavy losses only gave me 2 points against his 5.

Pöydällä On the table

I am still continuing with Turkish commanders, of whom there is abundance on the table as well as artillery crews both for army of the Commonwealth and Sultan. Both are advancing at snail pace.

Cossack type cavalry - two banners of elite and one with spears have advanced faster. I see that my palette is a bit brighter than in first batch. I have also gained some confidence in process of giving troops a theme even when they don't wear uniforms but mixed clothing.

Cossacks have been accompanied by petyhorchy - Lithuanian lancers that give me more options if going towards that part of Commonwealth in skirmish games. Similarly - themed banners - the red one is private banner of magnate Lubomirski in transition to becoming hussars so opulence is in my opinion here justified.
Liettualaisia peitsimiehiä, petyhorchy - ero kasakkatyyppiseen ratsuväkeen ei ole historiallisesti täysin selvä vaikka joukkojen nimi onkin dokumentoitavissa. By Fire and Swordissa voivat käyttää peitsiä tai keihäitä. Lippue edessä on maalattu suhtellisen yhdenmukaisesti kuvaamaan kapinallisen ylimyksen Lubomirskin husaareiksi värväämää yksikköä, jonka varustaminen jäi kesken.

Valmisteltuna on myöskin isohko  rykmentti janitsaareja.
I have also prepped a largish regimetn of janissaries. For them I got the soup kettles, kazan, from OldGlory. They have no real use in By Fire and Sword and probably would not follow the troops into battle, but the weirdness was just too much to resist:

Janitsaarien soppapata, kazan, Old Glorylta. Tuskin löytyisi tulilinjasta, mutta outoudessaan vastustamaton lipun korvike.

In proper order - Järjestelmällisesti alusta loppuun

Yea, right that would be the intelligent way of approaching this. Instead I packed away most of the cossacks and pancerny and started working on the hussars. (And Petyhorchy - on the side.)

Olisi oikeasti fiksua viimeistellä ne melkein valmiit pois alta. Kun tarmoa tehdä kuitenkin on rajatusti aloitin siitä mikä on kivaa, pienestä husaarieskadroonasta ja sutien puhdistamiseksi ylimääräisestä väristä tein siinä ohessa vähän juttuja petyhorcheille. Husaarien peitsien liitos keskellä on aika viheliäinen keksintö.

Tatars - Tataarien jäljillä

Ikuisuusprojektilta tuntuva, viime vuonna Wilanovin reissulta hankittujen tataarien maalailu jatkuu.

In front Tatars in Polish service or lipka. In the background tatar warriors.

Kameraa kohti ratsastelee puolalisten palveluksessa olevia tataareja, keskellä Krimin tataarisotureita.
I acquired a bunch of Tatars last year in Wilanov, some serving Polish crown others Crimean khan. They have been on painting table since spring and yesterday got their arrowshafts and reins finally painted. Couple of more evenings should see them have all horsetails and manes, boots and other small details and get them to dipping and basing stage. For some tastes they may be too colourful, this is a wealthy and brave horde with lots of loot.

Divers wips Sekalaisia maalauksia

Playing By Fire and Sword gave a nudge to work on getting stuff ready. So on the table janissaries march steadily towards completion. Here after glossy magic wash and sanded. In the background Hadzi Giray and colonel Oskierko.

I also took under work some special characters I got last year and continued with Imperial commanders. They don't have any immediate use, but the commanders have been cluttering the table for quite long.

Janitsaarien komentajaksi on nimetty komentaja Jussuf Passa. Tälle herralle pelikäyttöä voisi ollakin joten hän pääsi kiilaamaan. Jussufin värit Rålambin pukukirjasta soveltaen.

For skirmish games janissaries use named commander Jussuf Passa so he got a place in painting queue. Colours of Jussuf from Rålamb book of ottoman clothing.

Not usable in skirmish, but long waiting inspiration because of its character has been following outfit. The best mehter band this side of Danube, the one, the only,  Military marching ensemble of Sylistria, Cavus Biber yalniz kalpler bant.

Puolan tataareja.

And in quite different vein tatar troops for the Commonwealth. They could also work as rebels, allied to turks and tatars proper, but than I would need more of them.

Division game AAR - divisioonapeli pelipäivänä

So for the Nordic games day we staged a division size game at my local library.

Puolalaisjoukkojen keskustaa.

Hyökkäävät ruotsalaiset vasemmalla, puolalaiset oikealla
I had a Polish crown division, consisiting of force of pretty strong light and elite Cavalry regiments, Basic strength volunteer and Dragoon regiment, overstrength infantry regiment and some additional units.

My opponent brought a garrison division with two barestrength national infantry regiments, regiment of national reiters, minimum strength regiment of dragoons and some additional artillery and musketeers.

To my great surprise the Swedish commander, heavily outnumbered decided to use his forces for a surprise attack.   With the large difference in strength points he decided to use a surprise attack - giving him forward deployment, assisted with an additional artillery barrage and some field fortifications to cover his flanks.
Ruotsit valmiusasemissa
For additional effects he rolled major panic, good omens and march losses to my troops.

I won recon, uncontested, by throwing the light regiment to the task. Hit by march losses earlier that regiment took further losses by having troops straying during recon - so the regiment deployed in two different parts and quite battered even before the game began. For good measure this same regiment was hit by panic on turn one.

Puolalaisten vasenta sivustaa

Even with dragoons detailed for flank attack and light regiment deployed in advance position I had trouble fitting all my troops to the deployment area. (We had slightly too narrow table, in future deployment area should probably be fixed for full size in such cases.)
Since I knew I had to take two rounds of fire without firing back I had a screen of less valuable troops between my heaviest hitters and the Swedish artillery.

In hindsight - this was a risky tactic.

Ruotsalainen tulivalmistelu.
I survived the initial barrage relatively unharmed and with formation almost intact.
On round 1 of actual game I tried to maneuver my troops forward to a position where they could charge the enemy next turn without being subject to musketry this turn. I simply could not get them all to position where they would not have been subject to case shot by artillery.
Losses to case shot cause automatic morale tests and with these fumbled I had fleeing troops crashing into ready troops, causing both disorder and panic as they fled from the Swedish guns.

Häröpallo kierroksen 1 lopussa

By the end of round 1 my hussar banner had fled the field, elite cavalry regiment was in severe disorder, volunteer regiment was in disorder, largely fleeing and covering the field of fire of the infantry and artillery and elements of the light cavalry that had deployed to Swedish flank had been shot to flee offboard.

By the end of round 2 Volunteers have been wiped out in cascade of fleeing that has taken with it crews of artillery and almost the musketeers of infantry regiment.
Light cavalry regiment was within one point of breaking and elite one was in only slightly better shape.
On the plus side my falcons and 6 pdr had hurt enemy infantry, although nowhere badly enough to force panic.

My dragoons enter from the Swedish right flank, but fail to cause any panic. On Round three some shots were exchanged with no real results. Poles have taken a beating although most losses were fleeing, not killed units. I have still hold of all the scenario points, but my main force is perilously close to braking - and the game would continue for 5 more rounds.

Nice experiment, with some, but not too many, interested spectators. For demo game I had too many minis on the table or rather, we should have come to do the setup hour before starting time. We made the scenery night before, but just unpacking and organizing armies to the table took much longer than anticipated. Also the game itself ran a bit slowly with little events. So for demo purposes a skirmish might be the way to go.

On tactical level - I should have launched those troops capable of reaching the enemy on first roun in charge despite anticipated losses. Now I ended up taking those losses anyway in space of two rounds, without touching the enemy. On my left flank I should have run sideways to get more space, despite exposing new troops to gunnery. And deployed in a way that would have allowed the volunteers to get sideways without blocking the artillery from shooting. I had congested deployment area, and my deployment added to the problem.

Kylän valtaus Taking of a Village

Starting the games on fall.
For the first time we tried the Fire and Sword skirmish scenario Village.
As the stronger player with my 10 FP Polish all cavalry force I had the joy of trying to  dislodge a Muscovite force of 5 FP from the Village.

We had trouble interpreting the scenario definition of village and ended up playing it with the village as one continual area of Build up area. Quick searc of forums afterwards showed we are not only ones who have misinterpreted the scenario in this respect. One is supposed to have area delineated by fence, that has rulesmechanical properties, couple of houses that actually work as separate houses in rules sensa AND the area left in between counts as build up area.

Fun was had by both players though, with valiant servant cossacks repelling Polish volunteers, pancerni, wallachians, tatars and cossacks in turn. In the end I managed to get foothold in the village, but with heavy losses victory went with closest of margins to my oppoment.

Lessons learnt - cavalry charges inside villages are painful for the attacker if You are attacking defending cavalry. I felt like the bandits in seven samurai. All the advantages stacked to the defender do add up. Houses would have aggravated some of this, but then again they would have given cover to the attackers too. Besides their scouting ability the wallachians have the advanatage in actually carrying ammo to the battle so they can be used to soften up the enemy. And when light cavalry meets other light cavalry for a shooting match movin last is actually an advantage. In charging not so much.

Pelien alku syyspuolella.

Imperial regiment of foot and Polish dragoons

At last something that is not WIP.
Regiment of foot with flag of Oberst Holk, supported by a regimental gun. Musketeers and pikemen from QR miniatures 30 years war range. Gun and gunners from Wargamers range of Swedes.
Joy to paint although the amount of details on musketeers was beginning to get on m nerves at the end.

Dragoons - Swedish dragoons from Wargamer, with colourscheme suitable to Polish Royal dragoons - but could in a pinch serve also as Danish or Imperial dragoons.

Same regiment - box of dragoons and dragoons from the Swedish skirmish pack - dismounted.

Both troops were painted by first doing block painting, than washed with mixture of india ink and floor polish and then given nongloss varnish.

QR miniatures - some 15 mm cavalry

Yesterday was assemby for Poles in here today I mounted them on cardboard for undercoating and possibly painting too.

Here are some pics and my feelings on the guys.

QR light cavalry with a member of nobility leading on.
Sold as light cavalry - these troopers have no visible armor. Could work as wallachians, volunteers or cossacks in my army. For Polish cossacks they might be slightly underarmoured. Nice mixture of bows and carbines.
Members of nobility

Nice gowns, seem to give good opportunity for opulent painting. No bows, quivers or carbines, but case of pistol holsters. Separate heads and weapons. I struggled with the weapons, but heads fitted easily.

QR Pancerni

Commander with fur hat, leading a noble again. Carbines and quivers bows on those without. Separate weapons and right hands on some. Easy to glue on. My favorite is estoc carried by fourth from the left.
QR 30 Years War cuirassiers
Five wear closed helms, three have zishagge helmets, all in 3/4 armour. 3 with drawn swords rest with pistols. Will no doubt find a place in early 30 Years war army. Detail on zishagge is especially pleasing to me.
QR 30 years war Reiters
Of the eight six seem to have breastplates. 2 of these have weird helmets of the type shown as Swedish early cavalry helm in Osprey, close to kapalina. The rest have hats. Pistols for all the armored troopers, drawn swords for the two guys in long buff? coats. Will nicely turn into a gruffy looking company of German Livonian or Curonian mercenaries I think. Could also work as early Swedish company.

New goodies

The mail brought some new stuff.
Osprey-book on Polish Hussars, giving some new ideas for painting the heavy hitters.
Batch of miniatures from Minifigs and Matchlock ranges and some figs from QR miniatures.

I mainly worked with QR stuff yesterday. The cavalry I was working with, different Poles and Tatars/Kalmuks from Russian range had horses and riders cast in one piece. Level of detail was pretty nice to my eyes, quality of cast was decent with pretty little flash.
Mixture of QR Lithuanian Tatars and Tatars/Calmucs from their Russian range

Some of the ranges had separate heads (Szlachta and lithuanian tatars) and some separate weapons on part of figures(Pancerni, Szlachta and some of the tatars.) I personally dislike gluing such minuscule details, although the estoc on one of the pancerni was very nice detail.

Generally these guys are a tad pudgier than by Fire and Sword  and Legio Heroica figures. It remains to be seen if separate banners of these guys stand up from the general lineup too much.

sunnuntai 12. tammikuuta 2014

Pancerni finished and some WIP

The Pancerni have gotten their bases fixed and covering off matt varnish. Either cold or ambient moisture has given it some gloss though.

The Polish armies are not really known for their infantry, but it existed. Legio heroica Polish infantry together with Wargames Lan infantry.
Berdisches date the the companies on the left more towards the end of 17th century.  Troops on right have tiny hatchet that don't really show here. For a novice it was remarkable how much quicker it is to paint troops on foot with relatively uniform clothing rather than  ireegular cavalry.

maanantai 2. joulukuuta 2013

Units that have already seen action

None of these units have gotten the varnish or flocking.
Some of them would require more than just that.

The pancerni are most advanced in painting - Legio Heroica production sans lances so far. Lacking some higlighting, maybe  and static grass or other basing texture. The hardest hitting unit in my skirmish force - so far deployed in squadron of 3+2 bases.
Cossacks - the main troop of a Polish commander - Legio Heroica Polish light cavalry. Some touchup and work on bases required. The hitting power of their charge has been surprising. Elite cavalry rule, companion special rule and impact bonus from long charge really make these guys lethal.
Legio Heroica Gonullu. ie Ottoman cavalry from the Balkans. I have fielded them as Wallachians. Decent scouts - and have even won a melee fight with artillery battery. Without the lances that they would have as Ottoman troops.
The Polish commander - Legio Heroica General with a standard bearer. So far fielded as a colonel in skirmish battles.
Troop of Acies Edizioni Croats. I have fielded them as Polish cossack cavalry with no qualms. They may make an appearance as Croats at some point if I get an Imperial force onto the field. Standard bearer - at this point without his flag, from Legio Heroica gonullu range.
Last a company of Dragoons - From by Fire and Sword Swedish skirmish set, with colors of Polish Crown Dragoons - although in western costume, not the typically Polish.

Together these guys form a pretty strong skirmish force, but they apart from the dragoons and together with the other forces I have underway these guys help to flesh out regiments for the divisional level of play. Especially cossacks are required since Polish division needs to have minimum of two Polish cavalry regiments. There is some leeway whether they are basic, light or elite, Lithuanian or Polish, but cossack cavalry is required in all. They can have as support dragoons, infantry or western type cavalry regiments and divisional companies in relation to the amount of  regiments (max five).

Getting to the divisional level will probably take time, so there is strong temptation to just push on in gettin more units into recognizable colors at the same time and leave final basing and finishing to  one big final effort. However, since I will probably need to look at these fellows of skirmish play for longish period I try to get them into shape that does not hurt my eyes before the New Year.
