Tarentine & Gaul cavalry WIP

Well the blasted Gauls tried to overtake Tarentines, but did not quite make it yet.
Both have basic colours for horses so I can finish the Tarentine riders and have fun with the Gaulish horsemen with better conscience.

Numidians and Gauls Wip

Very busy month at work that has interestingly enough resulted in some paintings to empty the mind in the evenings.

Töiden muuttokiireet ovat yllättävää kyllä edistäneet maalausta.

Toinen galliyksikkö odottaa väripesua ja beissien viimeistelyä.
Yhdessä aiemmin valmistuneiden kanssa. Together with the earlier batch.

Second unit of Gauls expecting magic wash and finishing up the bases.

I am afraid I might get hooked on trying to learn doing barbarian shields by freehand. Nice lines alternating with the brush not co-operating at all makes for interesting times. And since on the table small mistakes vanish this is kind of relaxing. Same goes for my attempts to recreate plaid.

Kilpimaalaus koukuttaa.

Samoin pyrkimys skottiruutuun. Kamera tuo kyllä virheet esiin, mutta pöydän tasolla eivät juuri erotu.

Vanhemmista tuotoksista olen puskenut numidien ratsuväkeä eteenpäin. Väripesun jäljiltä kiiltävä, odottaa beissien viimeistelyä ja lakkaa.

I've tried to be methodical and finish some earlier units Numidian cavalry has gone through magic wash and is expecting finishing touches to its bases and varnish to kill the shine. On the line waiting are Peon citizen cavalry which may take some time with all its nice shiny little details, 2 units of basic libyan spearmen, 1 unit of African veterans, 1 unit of Spanish scutarii, some Italic medium infantry,  Tarantine light cavalry and elephants. Trying to get past them is Gallic cavalry which may succeed since these gauls were such fun.

Gauls - finished. Gallit valmiina

Just what it says, got these  guys ready to play.

Keltit kelteisillään.
Pelivalmis yksikkö. Vielä suhaus lakkaa jahka keli kuivaa, tappamaan vähän kiiltoa ja pitämään ruohoja paremmin paikallaan.

WIP Gauls

First warband of gauls for Hail Caesar, to augment Carthaginian army.
This time shields in freehand. Luckily most of the guys are fighting naked so there is limited amount of plaid. Still some touchup to do before wash goes over. Sheaths, hair and beard of leader and his assistant and some fogotten necklace. Old glory naked gauls mixed with gaul command and some fighters with just pants. Not really mixable with Forged in Battle guys, these heroes are much more robust and tall, but will probably do just fine as separate unit.

Working with shields Kilpityötä

On the working table lately has been my troops for Carthage. I've been adding paint unit by unit to get basic force for Sword and Spear slowly ready for a game. With huge amount of similarly armed Libyan spearmen, Campanian hoplites etc. I purchased some decals from Little big men studios to use with the fellers.

Pelipöydällä ovat edelleen pysytelleet puunilaiset liittolaisineen. Koska kilpimiehiä on rutosti hankin Littlebig Men Studion siirtokuvia nopeuttamaan projektia.

I have kind of mixed feelings of these actually. The detail is very fine, much finer than I could aspire to with freehand. On the other hand it is so small I don't really see it from standing gaming distance.

Yksityiskohdat ovat todella hienoja, enkä kuvittelekaan maalaavani tätä kokoluokkaa vapaalla kädellä. Kuitenkin yksityiskohdat sulautuvat silmissäni normaalilla pelipöytäetäisyydellä aikalailla toisiinsa. Jolloin freehandit näkyvät - kaikkine virheineen selvemmin.

Process itself is relatively straightforwad and quality of product is quite good. Spanish decals don't fit all variations of Spanish scutae, but that is minor irritant. I had trouble getting decals to curve around hoplitetype shields, but reading instructions again and precutting the backing paper helped in that.

Cutting of centre spine of scutum is pain in the... Kupuran ja keskivahvikkeen aukon leikkaaminen irti on viheliäistä.
Itse prosessi on melko yksinkertainen ja kuvien laatu nähdäkseni hyvä. Kaikkiin espnjalaiskilpiin kuvat eivät sovi, koska kilpien koot vaihtelevat millin puolitoista figusta riippuen.
Mixture of mainly unedged shields with couple that have the edges touched up after adding the decal. Useimmista kilvistä puuttuu reunan maalaaminen samanväriseksi tai puunilaisten tapauksessa pronssinväriseksi.
Summa summarum.

Summa Summarum I could recommend this for someone  who does not wish to paint shields himself but wishes fine detail anyways. Someone with fine skills of freehand painting may achieve something more suitable to scale, but that will take insane amount of time and like said some serious skills.

Self motivational inventorypicture

Partly to motivate, partly to visualize what I am doing. Project Carthage gathered on the gaming table.
Here is the stuff I have based and partly painted.  Quite a bunch, but for proper game of Hail Caesar, more would be needed. Luckily there is option of trying Sword and Spear as mid-level goal scheduled to this autumn.

From back left: campanian hoplites unpainted, Thorakitai, partly in colors, small unit of African veterans, 2 units on mostly painted Libyan spearmen, Painted in midleft Italian allies by Xyston, naked bunch of Gauls, Iberian scutarii, and Libyan heavy cavalry
line of five elephants of various makers
line of infantry skirmishers, slingers, numidians caetrati and more slingers
line of cavalry skirmishers on left Numidians, on the right Tarantines.

More Gauls are already in the works, and I have some more FiB Libyan spearmen, unit of Etruscans, unit of Scutarii and Celtiberians, Oscan armored and unarmored peltasts and unit of illyrians(to play ligurians maybe). For laughs I took Black Hat hoplites 1  unit. Incoming are three more units of hoplites,  Etruscan hoplites, Libyan militia hoplites, Libyan heavy cavalry, 2 different Spanish cavalry units and Numidian elephants. And Gaulish cavalry from Old Glory. Alltogether scary amount of stuff to paint and a bit heavy on the cavalry. And Elephants. A bit much for a playable army, but I aimed for ability to field an Magna Graecian-Italian or Syracusan army, and in Sword and Spear have both Carthage and that on the field at the same time.

Projektiin kuuluu lisää galleja, joista osa on jo maalattavana beissamattomina, ratsuväki vasta tilattuna. Black hatilta on hopliittiyksikkö. Tilauksessa  on vielä etruskilainen hopliittiyksikkö, 3 erilaista kreikkalaishopliittien laumaa, libyalainen kansalaishopliittien yksikkö, libyalaista raskasta ratsuväkeä, espanjalaista ratsuväkeä kaksi yksikköä ja numidialaisia norsuja. Järkyttävä maalausurakka, vaikka yksiköt kyllä tulevatkin melko valmiiseen kuntoon asti hyvin nopeasti. Aika paljon tinaa yhdeksi armeijaksi ja varsinkin ratsuväkeä ja norsuja on suhteessa paljon. Toisaalta tarjoaa jo rungon Etelä-Italian kreikkalaisen tai Syrakusan armeijan pelaamiseen, Sword and spearissa jopa karthagiolaisia vastaan.

Wip Turks and ancients

Following Eurocup and re-enactment camp took most of the time in June and early July.
So very little painting got done.

I got cemaat of janissaries underway and complemented some earlier miscallenous turks:
Janissaries, azaps and corsairs. Mix of wargamer and museum miniatures

Some SCW nationalists got prepared for painting - as well as some ancients:

Old Glory gauls - huge brutes in comparison to their FiG compatriots
 FiG Campanian hoplites
Some more elephants - I need lots if we ever get to do Zama. Right? Truth be told I just feel like collecting the pachyderms.
Tarentine light cavalry. I blame the Osprey book I ordered half by chance. In case Syracuse/ Magna Graecia army to oppose Carthagese gets done these have good use and in Carthage they can be used as allies- allthough they have same use as Numidian cavalry I already had.
Xyston Oscans, Campanians and Apulians mixed into one unit and Xyston Javelinmen as light infantry. Xyston javelinmen were so inspiring I rushed them to front of the queue and here is the result prewash:

Shields with freehand are inspiring and very frustrating at the same time. Same thing is waiting with the heavier Italian infantry and Gauls I am afraid. I have decals - fitted for smaller shields of Forged in Battle troops.
